The Economic Sustainability Committee led by Vice President received a snub from the Federal government as it’s resolution and recommendation on the reopening of NYSC camps nationwide was ignored.
The Yemi Osibanjo led committee had recommended that Corps members should have virtual orientation lectures and posted to their places of primary assignments. These resolutions were reached after intense study and survey of the effects of the COVID-19. It was observed that the spread of pandemic dropped late last year, when NYSC camps were reopened in November, Nigeria recorded a surge in the spread of the dreaded virus.
Speaking at a sensitisation webinar for the 2020 Batch B Stream II corps members on Friday, the Director of the NYSC , Brig. Gen . Shuaibu Ibrahim , stated that there would be no changes in the routine at the orientation camps . Brig. Gen. Shuaibu responding to a question stated ““No changes in the routine just that you will be observing social distancing”.
Also, responding to a question on why the Federal government snubbed the Osinbajo report and went ahead with the orientation exercise, the DG of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu stated that certain protocols and measures have been put in place to mitigate the spread of the virus in NYSC camps.
He said “From the beginning of this outbreak , every country has had to make hard decisions and if you are not in that decision-making seat , you probably don’ t understand how hard this is. Do you stop a child from going to school for one year or do you manage this outbreak and close schools ? We cannot afford to close down schools , close everywhere, working places , close ports. It is just not possible.”
“So , we have got to find a way to continue moving forward with certain aspects of daily life in a controlled way , mitigating risks as much as possible .
