Chairman Of Abia State Accused Of Assaulting HOD

The Chairman of Aba North Local Government of Abia State, David Ikonne, has allegedly assaulted the Head of Department of Works (HOD) in the council, Mrs. Chidinma Nwanosike.

The woman was said to have been hospitalised.

It was revealed that the incident is causing unrest among council workers, who saw it as an assault on the entire local government workers in the state.

They promised not to resume work until Governor Okezie Ikpeazu addressed the matter.

Abia State President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Mr. Ikechi Nwaigwe, who confirmed the incident, said the woman told them that the chairman accused her of sabotaging his administration and before she could say anything, he attacked her with planks and pipes.

He said other workers, however, restrained the chairman from inflicting further injuries and pains on the woman.

Sources at the council, who preferred anonymity, said the crux of the matter was that the chairman tried to force the HOD to sign certain documents she felt would affect her job in future, but instead of the council boss to query her, at worst, he attacked her with objects.

Addressing reporters at the council secretariat in Eziama, Nwaigwe said the actions of the chairman would be the last in the state.

He said NULGE had taken action by shutting down Aba North Local Government secretariat, which he noted, was a sign of the beginning of total strike.

We’ve already declared strike in Aba North to prevent this issue from degenerating into assaults on our members. We want to save our members; therefore, every council worker in Aba North must remain at home for now.

At press time, workers in the council had vacated their duty posts. The offices were shut in accordance with the directives by the NULGE president.

However, Ikonne, according to reports, while admitting that he only confronted the woman on certain issues that had been slowing down development at the council, denied using any object on her.

It was learnt that the House of Assembly had intervened.

Speaker Chinedum Orji has reportedly directed the Clerk to invite the council chairman, NULGE state executive, the assaulted woman and other principal officers of the council to appear before the assembly for a possible amicable resolution of the matter.
