Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly abducted the priest-in-charge of St. Theresa Catholic Church Parish in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The parish priest, Rev. Fr. Godfrey Mark Chimezie, was said to have been abducted Wednesday morning along Enyiukwu road in Ohokobe Afaraukwu-Ibeku part of Umuahia, the state capital.

According to reports from residents, the kidnappers, who were armed to the teeth, intercepted the Catholic cleric after he had concluded the early morning mass at St. Gabriel church, Opururie Afaraukwu.

The priest was said to have been forced out of his Toyota Corolla car into their SUV and sped away.

Those that know the catholic priest said the Enugu-born was ordained a priest earlier this year.

When contacted the Abia State Police Command Spokesman, Geoffrey Ogbonna in a telephone interview stated that he was yet to get report on the incident.

He urged friends, relations and parishioners of the abducted catholic priest to go to the nearest police station to make formal complaint of the matter, adding that the command had swung into action to ascertain the veracity of the kidnap incident.
