The Barcelona Captain has been handed a two-game ban after his dismissal against Atletico Bilbao
Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has been handed a two-game ban after he saw red in their Spanish Super Cup clash against Atletico Bilbao, however, Barcelona could still appeal. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) which is the governing body of football in Spain has ruled that the Argentine star would not serve a lengthy suspension after lashing out at Atletico Bilbao forward, Asier Villalibre.
There were fears that the Argentine star could face up to 12 weeks on the side-lines as a result of his actions but RFEF and Match officials have decided that there was no aggression on the part of Messi, The RFEF only presides over league matters in Spain with Lionel Messi dismissal occurring in the Super cup.
The Ban means the Footballer will miss his team’s meeting with Cornella in the Copa del Rey and Elche in the La Liga. The player would be available for his team’s clash with Atletico Bilbao in the league. Barcelona gaffer, Ronald Koeman has refused to condemn the action of his skipper saying “I can understand what Messi did. I don’t know how many times they fouled him, and it’s normal to react when they keep trying to foul you as a player who is looking to dribble with the ball, but I need to see it again properly.”
Barcelona are third on the La liga standings and will travel to Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero where they play Elche on Sunday 24.
