Residents Of Abuja worried As Refuse Dumps Litter On The Road

Residents of Abuja have expressed worry as heaps of refuse now compete for space on the streets and major access roads in the territory with little effort at evacuating them.

In the highbrow area of Guzape District, a refuse dump has taken over one lane of a major road, close to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioners’ quarters.

Investigation also showed that in Asokoro, where most of the state governments have governors’ lodges, there was hardly a street where there were no refuse dumps.

The situation also affected satellite towns like Lugbe, Karu, Kubwa, Deidei, Mpape Gwagwalada and Nyanya, where traders display their goods, including vegetables and fruits close to refuse dumps, and in some cases, on the heaps.

Director of Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Abubakar Alhassan, who should have been at the forefront of the city’s sanitation, was said to be busy moving official files around, as he has just three weeks to begin his statutory retirement from the civil service.

The AEPB’s Deputy Director of Information, Janet Peni, was elusive on the issue.

One of the waste management contractors, who pleaded anonymity, stated that evacuation of refuse had been very slow, following delays in payment.

The contractor lamented that most of the contractors were frustrated and overstretched,

because they now borrow money to pay workers on an instalment basis and some categories of workers, who are not comfortable with the delayed payment, have stopped coming to work.

According to the contractor,

it is only a few street sweepers, who accept a token from their wages, that are still coming to work, while the truck drivers, who evacuate dumps from streets had downed tools to protest delays of their payment schedule.
